Ha!  Smiley well, good it got solved, somehow...
2  General Category / General Discussion / Re: My NXT brick have going "insane" on: July 04, 2011, 06:38:01 AM
I don't think this can be the result of any kind of software issue.

It still seems like a sticking button to me.
it might be dust/durt or another contaminant creating a false positive in the button wirings.
Perhaps try to disasemble the NXT as far as you can and dare, and give every a good clean with an air compressor.
!! be careful !!

Try grabbing a multimeter, and check if the button contacts (I suspect the right button, by looking at the video) are always "closed".
remove the rubber buttons, and test the leads below, they shouldn't make contact. if they do, you've got some sort of false contact.

It looks like one of your buttons is "sticking".
It behaves the exact same way as if the "right button" was pushed continiously, or repeatedly. It might be dirt, dust or moiste. Did you use your NXT in harsh conditions? humidity, dust, sand, ...?

Something somewhere is causing a false contact in that button.

First thing to do is to screw open your NXT, remove the cover and rubber buttons.
Than give the button contacts a good clean, and check for dirt on the inside of the rubber buttons as well.

It won't hurt to remove the dust from the rest of the NXT's interior as well. A short somewhere deeper might have the same effect.
Be very carefull, screw everything together again, and let us know if it helps.

(note: make sure not to leave fingermarks on the NXT display, or the inside of the glass in the cover, it is impossible to clean that when the cover is installed.
4  Programming Software / NXT-G / Re: The Motor Block Problem on: May 21, 2011, 01:18:02 AM
I'll look in to it, when you post the program itself, rather than a screenshot.
I've got a different NXT, different motor, different firmware, and NXT-G1.0.
So If I can test your program, and it works with my set-up, You can rule out any programming mistakes, and start searching further on for problems with FW, NXT hardware or compilation...
Good luck.

5  General Category / General Discussion / Re: NXTPrograms "Racecar" problem on: February 27, 2011, 01:50:14 AM
newer issues have come up now that I am curious about like why is it so hard to find suggestions and ideas for the 9688 Renewable Energy Add-On Set?  I am hopeful that I do not need to order the computer software and hoping that someone posts some useful information on how to get the most out of this set with an NXT.  I have done a few experiments and have once again learned that I know less than I would like to when it comes to materials that have little directions to it.  I should mention that the add on set has machines and mechanisms manuals but nothing for combining the set with an NXT.  In fact on the back of the directions it says" LEGO Mindstorms Education (building instructions and activities at www.MINDSTORMSeducation.com)"  There is nothing there about the add on set and NXT merging.  Unless I am mistaken...feel free to enlighten me if I am wrong... I certainly have proven that I should take a class myself...

Yet that's something completely different.
You might get more & better answers by opening a new tread about it.

And why can't you downgrade the firmware?
note: you need to download the FW first from the LEGO website:
http://mindstorms.lego.com/en-us/support/files/default.aspx#Firmware
7  General Category / General Discussion / Re: NXTPrograms "Racecar" problem on: February 23, 2011, 08:41:18 AM
Yes, I can unfortunately confirm one possible fact.  One of my students downloaded the firmware to his NXT with out my permission, (long story,) and his NXT can no longer be found by my laptop or his with either the USB cable or the bluetooth dongle.  We both have the new 2.0 Education software installed.  Although I am not happy that he did this it had the positive effect of confirming the possible compatibility problem the new firmware has.  Our school computers have the original, 1.0 education software, and he was able to establish a USB link with one of them.  I did not have time today to try the bluetooth dongle on this computer but will check tomorrow.  So to summarize, although I do not pretend to be an expert at understanding firmware, patches and software versions...I believe there is a problem with either the 2.0 education software or the latest firmware.  I would love to find anyone who has the same trouble or a solution or suggestion...I will try to test the bluetooth dongle on the 1.0 computer tomorrow and add more to this saga.  Thanks for listening.

And how is the original problem going?

Perhaps you could downgrade your FW, to ensure compatability?
I believe (not sure) the latest FW availible was 1.28, when the racecar program was made.
so: FW1.28 is probably the FW used to test and debug the racecar program by the creator.
Using FW1.28 should outrule any firmware hitches.

I'm not sure if I'll update my firmware, as it seems to be working again.  Huh I'll definitely re-install BricxCC, mostly because that's what I use nowadays. I can just re-make my programs (form NXT-G) in NXC and then actually be able to work with them right.  Grin

Thanks though!
If you program only in Bricxcc, you shouldn't have problems with the new 1.28FW.
The problem is that the firmware you have is newer than NXT-G1.0.
firmware 1.0 - 1.05 were developed for use with NXT-G1.X.
the 1.28FW is designed for use with NXT-G2.0.
Bricxcc should handle all FW versions hitchless.
10  Hardware / Miscl Questions / Re: New NXT brick w/ static in speaker on: February 06, 2011, 08:11:14 AM
I'm not sure, but it might just be a poor solder in the speaker connection.
You can always screw the NXT open, and search for an obvious bad connection, might be an easy fix...
It could also be a FW problem, have you tried redownloading it?
It's a long shot, but if the problem is software related, it will probably get fixed by reloading the FW.
11  Programming Software / NXT-G / Re: Firmware failure, issue any ideas? Int Brick, doesn't work at all now... on: January 24, 2011, 08:25:07 AM
Thank you!  I guess I should have searched better!  Your links to the other threads led me to the patch, that I had overlooked.  I have a Mac and needed the patch to prevent this from happening.  I am currently holding my NXT Brick that is healthy again.  I owe you!   Grin

it is hard to find a solution if you don't know what the problem is called.
If you whould have got the nickname of the problem, you whould have found it from the beginning.
And indeed, you owe me: $45/hour Wink.
12  General Category / General Discussion / Re: The Dreaded Clicking Brick Syndrome has Returned!!!! on: January 24, 2011, 08:19:02 AM
Thought it might be interesting to point out that I had the same clicking syndrome and have only recently joined these blogs.  I posted a similar issue and was led here by "Dino_Martino"  After downloading the patch for my Mac, I too no longer have the dreaded clicking problem and currently have a healthy NXT Brick!  So thanks to you all! Especialy, Dino_Martino for being patient with me!  Smiley

Glad to hear another problem fixed.
And thank *you* for you the appreciation!

I suppose NXT manual and NXT-G help should tell you how to load FW.
1. Download the correct FW from the LEGO site.
         I suggest using FW1.05 for NXT-G1.0
download it here:
http://cache.lego.com/upload/contentTemplating/Mindstorms2SupportFilesDownloads/otherfiles/downloadCFDA08F87A7880FA26A9EB4C1BFBB909.zip

2. open NXT-G
3. Connect the NXT to the PC using USB.
4. Click the "Update NXT firmware"-button in the "Tools" or "Extra" menu (I'm not sure, I use NXT-G in dutch) -- see screenshot attached.
5. Use the browse button in the wizard, and select the FW-file you just downloaded from the web.
6. Click download, and the wizard should guide you trough the rest.

If anything goes wrong, do let me know.

It is best to keep your NXT-G and FW versions synchronised. I've had some troubles too, trying to combine my NXT-G1.0 with FW 1.28...
Just stick with the 1.05FW, and everything will be fine.
The advantages of FW1.28 are not accesible anyway when programing in NXT-G 1.0.
15  Programming Software / NXT-G / Re: Firmware failure, issue any ideas? Int Brick, doesn't work at all now... on: January 21, 2011, 08:10:54 AM
Excuse me, I read straight over that sentence Smiley.
Do note that you will need to reload the firmware after you reset.
The issue is reffered to as "the clicking brick syndrome". Searching the forums and google will help.
Some things to get you started: (just the first google hits):

There are many more topics on the forum, and many more websites to be found. These are just the tips of the iceberg. Believe me, you're not alone.
good luck!
ps. No need for the video, we are all very familiar with the symptoms.  Sad
