I saw this picture on the lego web site and was wondering why dont they release the nxt parts for Maya for us mindstorm users because from this picture they must use maya(which is a free 3d graphics program).

thanks,

Ethan

Maya has a free version, but the full professional Maya package is not free.

But it would be nice if LEGO did release the parts drawings, if that is what they use for their CAD packaging.

I did find some folks using Maya and LEGO, but nothing serious.  Most of the forums tell people to use LDraw.

Now, if the LDD software would import and export LDraw files, that would be sweet!

edburdo, LDD CAN import LDraw files AND export LDraw files.
MPScholz, See the pistures on the link you posted to the LEGO site. Then choose the picture where you see a picture of a computer and a green LEGO bike on the screen. NOTE, there is a horizontal scroll bar under the pictures, use that to look through the other pics.

Ah thanks.
Now I see: "the link posted to LEGO" referred to my THE NXT STEP blog entry on the LEGO production line.

True, that appears to be Maya on the computer screen shown at that picture.

For truth to tell, I have not heard about that Maya before - but it looks rather professional.
Any experiences with it? Someone?

Only hearsay.  I've never used it myself.  I know a lot of people like it, and the free version is pretty nice.

I think the biggest hurdle would be getting the objects (all the LEGO parts).  If we had a library of those, it might be a good way to make instructions and models.

thats what im saying if we got all the lego part/ lego gave them to use then we could make biulding instruction that were as good as the ones in the bis that come with you lego sets.  so why doesnt lego give them our if we now that they have them.

Ethan, you open LDD, go to file, and choose import or export, and then you see the place where it stands what file format you want to import/export, then choose *.ldr and there you have it Wink

I seriously doubt they use Maya for the acutal part design,  they must use a full blown CAD program for that.  Maya is a 3d graphical arts program, very powerful, and it also has a rather steep learning curve.  It's used in all sorts of big industries, like TV, Video games, and animation.  Once you know how to use it well, it's great for making complex scenes and excellent renderings.  Lego problay uses it to create the building instructions, and box art, as well as other graphics.

The full version of Maya is extremely expensive, and isn't something anyone should legitamley have at home.  The free Personal Learning Edition is meant to be used to learn Maya, not to acutaly produce finished graphics (I belvie it watermarks the output).   Since no-one should really ahve the full version of Maya, there is no benefit to Lego to release these files.

If you are looking for proper CAD files of the NXT parts, CMU has put out Solidworks, and ProE drawings of them.  You should be able to take those and convert them into the CAD program of your choosing.
